When you think about a conservative Christian college the first words that often come to mind are not necessarily scandalous, lawsuit, or defrauding students but in recent days this does not even apply to Grand Canyon University or any of its sister schools. Recently the for-profit Christian school has been hit with a lawsuit in Phoenix, Arizona over claims the college is a fraud with predatory lending. This is the second case in as many weeks that this institution has fallen victim to a suit from a disgruntled former student who has alleged the college offered worthless financial aid that caused her to drop out. There are a number of similarities between the two Grand Canyon university lawsuits. Both involved former students who alleged that the college was offering a course of study that was irrelevant to their major and defrauding them of money. In both cases, the accused parties are asking for an amount of compensation to compensate for their loss, suffering, and damage.
The similarity in both of these cases is the targeted students are college students who were required to take out a lawsuit loan in order to pay for their classes. A former student of Grand Canyon University states in his lawsuit that the college offered a mandatory class action lawsuit loan to all students, which he says was a scheme to charge him money for an unrelated class. He is seeking monetary damages based upon the charges he feels were defrauding him. The suit is currently being handled by the legal firm of Williams Kherkher.
Another similarity is that both incidents involved former students who found themselves trapped in a web of lies after they signed up for a class action lawsuit loan. During the course of the lawsuit process, the defendant either pressured them into signing a release form or told them that they would be financially ruined if they did not agree to the plan. When these individuals finally got their lawsuit loans, they discovered that the college had created a number of problems for them. First, they discovered that they could not get any lawsuit loans from Grand Canyon University because of the state law. Also, they discovered that the college’s defense was based on flimsy arguments and forged evidence, which they now must pay for on their own.
Grand Canyon University was sued by at least three former students in their case. Their suits all hinge on similar claims of fraud, as well as demands for financial compensation.
